Goldenseal
(Hydrastis Canadensis)
What is it?
Highly valued by American Indians as a medicine, wild goldenseal is becoming increasingly rare. It has anti-microbial activity and is active against many disease-causing organisms. Goldenseal prevents bacteria from attaching to cells, stimulates the immune system, lowers fevers, and has anti-cancer effects.
What it does in the body
Goldenseal is used to treat inflammatory digestive conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers and colitis. It can also be used to treat painful menstruation and respiratory infections. It can be used as a mouthwash and to treat skin infections.
Cautions
Goldenseal should not be used in pregnancy or in cases of high blood pressure.
