Liquorice
(Glycyrrhiza Glabra)
What is it?
One of the most widely used herbs, liquorice has an important place in both Western and Eastern herbal medicine. It has hormonal, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antibacterial and antiviral effects. Liquorice has also been shown to stimulate the immune system.
What it does in the body
Liquorice has been used to treat inflammatory and allergic conditions, colds, viral infections, hepatitis, premenstrual syndrome, Addison's disease, peptic ulcers and skin conditions.
Cautions
Long-term use of liquorice can raise blood pressure. It should not be used during pregnancy or by anyone with high blood pressure, liver disease or kidney failure.
