Algae: Spirulina and Chlorella

What is it?

Algae are green, or 'blue-green' freshwater, one-celled organisms that can be grown, dried, and used as nutritional supplements.

What it does in the body

They are high in protein and contain all the amino acids. Spirulina is also a good source of iron, potassium, beta carotene and essential fatty acids. Some research suggests that the human body may not be able to absorb the form of vitamin B12 found in spirulina, and it may even block true vitamin B12 absorption.

Therapeutic uses of supplements

As it is high in protein, spirulina may be useful in stabilizing blood sugar levels and increasing energy. It is often used by those who are fasting and may also help in weight loss.
